Yamatotachibana, Toba’s most famous tangerine.

Together with Citrus depressa (Shikuwasa), which is found in the Ryukyu Islands (Okinawa), Citrus Tachibana (Tachibana) is the only citrus tree native to Japan. You may come across Tachibana trees on your hikes, especially if you go to the Toshi Islands. They used to grow wild but are now being replanted as initiatives have been taken to preserve this remarkable heritage. The fruit itself is very similar to modern mandarins but is more bitter and has a more delicate aroma. The flowers are also used to make tea, incense or macerated to flavour dishes, in a manner very similar to the orange blossom water dishes in North Africa and the Middle East.
